Creative ways to use white in your bathroom design

White has always been a traditional choice of colour for bathrooms, and it’s easy to see why. It evokes that sense of cleanliness and peace that so many of us want for the room whose purpose is to get us clean. However, the thing with white is that some people feel it can stray into being a bit cold and clinical, which can affect their ability to relax in their space. Here at NPM Bathrooms, our designers have a wealth of experience in creating spaces that are not only convenient and functional, but also fantastic places to relax as well, and wash away the worries of each day. So with that in mind, we’ve got a few creative ideas on how you can use white to the best effect in your bathroom!

What makes white so popular?

There are lots of reasons why white has always been a popular colour for bathrooms – here are just a few! First of all, it enlarges the space. Light bounces off white walls, so a white colour palette will keep your space looking bigger. Smaller bathrooms will look much better in light colours, and when combined with good lighting, you can avoid your bathroom becoming a dark and claustrophobic space.

It also makes a great backdrop. Museums and galleries use white walls as it makes the best backdrop for their art. If you want to make features in your bathroom stand out, make sure that the other parts of your bathroom are white, to avoid the space looking too busy.

It looks cleaner, too. Whilst the term clinical is used negatively, a clean bathroom is a positive thing. Bathrooms are a hygienic space, so bright whites can amplify how clean your bathroom is, as long as you remember to actually clean it! Dust and dirt show up most on white, which is why it is used to show that the space is clean and tidy. Of course, getting the balance right between clean and clinical is important.

Finally of course, it’s timeless. White and neutrals will always remain fashionable, so your bathroom will look great and stand the test of time, no matter what the changing trends are.

How Can I Use it Correctly?

To avoid it looking too clinical, here is how you can make your bathroom more exciting and interesting:

Use pattern and key colours

To balance out the white in your space, make the most of interesting patterns. You can use tiles to add pattern to walls and floors and consider using interesting shaped tiles, such as hexagonal tiles. This will mean the space is white and neutral, but still looks interesting

You could also contrast the white bathroom by using key colours in changeable features, such as towels and blinds. Keeping everything else simple means that when you get bored of the bathroom, you can instantly change it by swapping your towels and accessories for a new colour or pattern and easily revitalise the space.

Use contrasting textures

If you are using wood or have natural brick or stone features in your bathroom, white can make a nice contrast and really accentuate these elements. You can use textured ‘natural’ tiles in a stone or marbled effect and then keep everything else white for an elegant and timeless look.

Highlight features

When your bath and sink are luxuriously crafted, and the metal trims and taps look stunning – make sure they stand out! If you have a brilliant feature brick wall in your bathroom, keep everything else simple so that it is a strong focal point. Using white everywhere else will draw attention to the more interesting features in your bathroom.

Of course, if you want a few more specific ideas of how white can be used to best effect in your own personal space, our designers are always happy to help!
